Trenitalia and SkyTeam sign MoU to enhance integrated air–rail business travel
An MoU between Trenitalia and SkyTeam has launched a strategic collaboration focused on new technology designed to simplify and enhance the integrated air–rail travel experience for passengers.
For UK-based business travellers who often combine flights with rail connections across Europe, this development offers the prospect of smoother, more reliable multimodal journeys - reducing complexity and enabling seamless booking from departure airport to final Italian destination.
The partnership between Trenitalia (Gruppo FS) and SkyTeam, the global airline alliance, is centred on using technological innovation to deliver a fully integrated digital travel experience. Senior leaders including Patrick Roux, Chief Executive Officer at SkyTeam; Dao Nguyen, Vice President Revenue Development at SkyTeam; Giovanni Matassa, Director Business Development at SkyTeam; Gianpiero Strisciuglio, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager at Trenitalia; Mario Alovisi, Chief Marketing & Revenue Management Officer at Trenitalia; and Giuseppe Belvisi, Head of Customer Value Management & Partnerships at Trenitalia, met at the FRECCIALounge in Milano Centrale to discuss the next phases of development.
At the heart of the initiative is a new digital platform that will enable customers to purchase both flight and train tickets directly through SkyTeam member airline websites in a single transaction. This means travellers will be able to book their entire journey - doorstep to final destination - without managing multiple reservations.
The MoU also supports closer alignment of loyalty programmes. Trenitalia confirmed that CartaFRECCIA members will earn points on flights operated by participating SkyTeam airlines, while SkyTeam loyalty members will earn miles when connecting onto Trenitalia high-speed services. Additional shared benefits are being explored, including access to airport and railway lounges for SkyTeam Elite and Elite Plus customers, alongside CartaFRECCIA Gold and Platinum members.
Paul Baker, Sales Director of Global Travel Management, said the latest step in the partnership will prove popular among frequent travellers:
“UK-based business travellers rely on smooth, well-connected multimodal journeys when navigating Europe. This collaboration between Trenitalia and SkyTeam promises a more integrated, efficient and rewarding air–rail experience—something our customers value enormously.”
Notes for editors highlight that SkyTeam continues to build its intermodal capabilities across global markets, while Trenitalia invests in advanced digital solutions to strengthen high-speed rail connectivity.
