Lufthansa Group launches free high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi for business travellers
Lufthansa Group is launching free high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi across its airlines, beginning with a Lufthansa Airbus A320neo on 19 August 2026 and with approximately 850 aircraft across the Group expected to be equipped by 2029.
For UK business travel customers, the introduction of faster and more reliable in-flight connectivity could make a significant difference to productivity while travelling, allowing business travellers to work with cloud-based applications, access online services and stay connected with colleagues and clients while in the air. The new service will be available free of charge to Miles & More customers and Travel ID users across all travel classes.
Lufthansa Group says its new "Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi", powered by Starlink, will provide passengers with internet bandwidth that in many cases is faster than their connection at home or in the office. Starlink's low-earth-orbit satellite technology is designed to support activities including video streaming, cloud-based working and other applications requiring high-speed connectivity.
The scale of the rollout will see Starlink technology installed on approximately 850 aircraft across Lufthansa Group's airlines, making it the largest airline group in Europe to equip its fleet with the high-speed internet product.
Following the first Lufthansa A320neo, aircraft operated by Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines will be among the next to receive the technology. Other Group airlines preparing for the rollout include ITA Airways, Edelweiss, Discover Airlines, Air Dolomiti, Lufthansa City Airlines and Eurowings, with the entire Lufthansa Group fleet scheduled to have the new connectivity offering by 2029.
Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of the Lufthansa Group, said:
"I am excited to announce the launch of the new Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi on board our Group aircraft. With it, we’re making high-speed internet an integral part of the travel experience - across all travel classes and on all Lufthansa Group airlines: That is how we understand premium. By 2029, all of the Group’s approximately 850 aircraft will be equipped with the technology. Our product promise doesn't end with the seats or the menu - today, connectivity is also an integral part of a truly outstanding onboard experience".
The project forms part of Lufthansa Group's wider investment in new aircraft and product and service improvements throughout the passenger journey. The Group says the rollout is intended to give passengers a consistently high-quality online experience on board its aircraft.
Paul Baker, Sales Director of Global Travel Management, said:
"Reliable, high-speed connectivity can be particularly valuable for business travellers, especially when a flight forms part of a busy working day. Being able to access cloud-based systems and continue working effectively in the air gives travellers greater flexibility over how they use their journey time. The fact that Lufthansa Group plans to introduce the technology across such a large fleet means this could become a useful benefit for many of our customers travelling across Europe and further afield."
The new Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi portal will allow passengers to browse the internet, although the airline group has also established rules governing how the service should be used. These have been developed following passenger surveys and are intended to reflect the preferences of the majority of Lufthansa Group customers.
Passengers will be required to use headphones when playing audio or video content and will be asked not to make voice or video calls or broadcast live streams from the aircraft. These measures should help business travellers take advantage of the enhanced connectivity without significantly changing the cabin environment for other passengers.
The Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi service is sponsored by Mastercard, which was also a partner of the airline group's previous FlyNet offering. Access to the new high-speed internet service will be free for Miles & More customers and Travel ID users, irrespective of their travel class.
Lufthansa's inaugural flight featuring Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi powered by Starlink is scheduled to take place on 19 August 2026, marking the beginning of the wider rollout across the Group's fleets.
