Emirates introduces innovative Economy Class headrest to improve long-haul business travel

Emirates has unveiled a new adjustable U-Dream Headrest for Economy Class passengers, becoming the first airline in the world to introduce the innovation across its fleet and aiming to significantly improve comfort and sleep on long-haul flights.

For Global Travel Management's customers, this is another example of how airlines are investing in the business travel experience beyond premium cabins. Many UK business travellers spend long periods flying in Economy Class, particularly on routes where company travel policies restrict premium cabin bookings. Improvements that make it easier to rest during overnight flights can help travellers arrive better prepared for meetings and may improve productivity at their destination.

The new U-Dream Headrest has been developed in partnership with Safran Seats and forms part of the manufacturer's Z400 Economy seat. Unlike a conventional adjustable headrest, the leather U-Dream design features padded, flexible side wings that fold inwards to cradle the passenger's head and neck. The headrest also moves vertically and tilts, allowing it to be adjusted for travellers of different heights and body types while helping prevent the head from falling forwards or sideways during sleep.

Emirates says the headrest has been independently tested and certified by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and is designed to be cleaned after every flight. Cabin crew have also been trained to assist passengers with adjusting the headrest to suit their individual preferences.

Introducing the new product, Sir Tim Clark, President Emirates Airline, said:

"Emirates never rests on its laurels when it comes to customer experience and we have found a way to significantly improve the comfort for Economy Class passengers, especially those travelling long-haul. The U-Dream changes the game if the person wants to sleep – by supporting the neck in full. No more neck pillows needed. It's another innovation that shows our commitment to customers and cements our Economy Class as the best."

The rollout is already underway. The U-Dream Headrest is currently available on three Emirates Airbus A350 aircraft, with all A350s expected to feature the new headrest by the end of the year. It will also be installed as standard on all 270 Boeing 777X aircraft ordered by the airline, while retrofitted Airbus A380s and existing Boeing 777 aircraft will begin receiving the upgrade from 2027 onwards.

The latest investment builds on Emirates' continued focus on enhancing its Economy Class product. The airline says its widebody fleet, ergonomically designed seating, spacious cabins, in-flight entertainment, complimentary Wi-Fi and onboard dining are all intended to provide a more comfortable long-haul journey for passengers.
