Heathrow completes £1bn security upgrade to speed up business travel
Heathrow has completed a £1bn technology upgrade that makes it the largest airport in the world to fully roll out next-generation CT security scanners, allowing passengers to keep liquids and electronics in their hand luggage and significantly speeding up the security process.
For UK-based business travellers, this is particularly welcome news, as Heathrow is a critical hub for domestic and international business travel, and faster, smoother security means less time queueing and more time focused on work, meetings or simply preparing for onward journeys during busy travel periods. The removal of the need to unpack laptops and liquids also reduces stress at the checkpoint, especially for frequent travellers moving quickly between meetings and flights.
The upgrade has seen all passenger security lanes across Heathrow’s four terminals replaced with state-of-the-art CT scanners, capable of processing thousands of passengers an hour while maintaining high safety and security standards. By producing clearer images of cabin baggage, the technology cuts preparation time at security and eases pressure during peak periods, helping to keep queues moving efficiently. The change is also expected to save almost 16 million single-use plastic bags every year, supporting more sustainable business travel through the airport.
The investment forms a key part of Heathrow’s long-term programme to improve the passenger experience and prepare for future growth. In 2024, Heathrow was named Europe’s most punctual hub airport, with more than 97% of passengers waiting less than five minutes to pass through security. Baggage performance has also improved significantly, with a load rate of over 98% in 2025, meaning more reliable journeys and fewer disrupted trips for airlines and business travellers alike.
Heathrow CEO Thomas Woldbye said,
“Every Heathrow passenger can now leave their liquids and laptops in their bags at security as we become the largest airport in the world to roll out the latest security scanning technology. That means less time preparing for security and more time enjoying their journey – and millions fewer single-use plastic bags. This billion pound investment means our customers can be confident they will continue to have a great experience at Heathrow.”
Paul Baker, Sales Director of Global Travel Management, said,
“For UK business travellers, time and predictability are critical, and this investment by Heathrow makes a real difference. Faster, less stressful security screening helps our customers move through the airport more efficiently, supporting smoother business travel and more reliable schedules, particularly during peak periods.”
