British Airways champions inclusivity with launch of rugby club support fund

British Airways has announced the launch of the British Airways Spaces for All Fund, a three-year initiative designed to support more than 30 community rugby clubs, with a focus on growing participation in women’s rugby.

This development will be of particular interest to UK-based business travellers, many of whom support or participate in local clubs or are involved in initiatives to improve inclusion and wellbeing in their communities. With the continued rise in female participation in sport and the close ties between travel and sports events, this investment aligns with broader efforts to make sport – and business travel – more inclusive, accessible and community-driven.

The fund, created in partnership with England Rugby, marks British Airways’ first grassroots-level investment in rugby. It aims to improve facilities across local clubs, with a particular emphasis on enhancing spaces that are welcoming and inclusive for women and girls. The timing of the announcement coincides with a busy summer for women’s sport across rugby, tennis, cricket and football – making the initiative even more relevant.

Plymouth Albion RFC and Plymstock Oaks are the first recipients of the fund. Plymouth Albion will renovate one of its key social spaces to provide a more inclusive and functional area for events and team activities. Plymstock Oaks will use the funding to enhance accessibility and outdoor facilities, improving the experience for players, supporters and the local community.

Calum Laming, British Airways’ Chief Customer Officer, said:

“We’re proud of our long-standing partnership with England Rugby over the past seven years, and the launch of our new sports fund marks an exciting new chapter.

We know rugby is more than just a game, it’s a sport with deep British roots that brings people together through community, spirit and tradition. Through the British Airways Spaces For All Fund, we’re proud to support local clubs at the heart of communities and drive positive change for players, volunteers and fans alike. As a British Original, we’re passionate about championing uniqueness and originality in all forms and look forward to what’s in store this year.”

Alex Teasdale, Executive Director of Women’s Game at England Rugby, added:

“We’re delighted to partner with British Airways, who understand the things that really matter to our sport. The creation and launch of the British Airways Spaces for All Fund is something that will help community rugby clubs to keep moving the dial and offer enhanced experiences to all of their members. If anyone knows how to offer a warm and welcoming experience, it’s British Airways, and so we’re really looking forward to working with them and our clubs to make sure women and girls get the best possible experience.”

Paul Baker, Sales Director of Global Travel Management, said:

“This is great news for business travellers who support rugby at every level. With British Airways backing local clubs and promoting inclusivity, travellers can be proud to fly with an airline that reflects their values – community, progress and national pride.”
