Avanti West Coast nationalisation: what business travellers need to know

Avanti West Coast services will return to public ownership from 7 March 2027, with the Government promising investment in the West Coast Main Line aimed at reducing delays, improving reliability and delivering a better experience for passengers.

For UK business travel, the changes matter because the West Coast Main Line is one of the country’s most important intercity rail routes, connecting London with major business destinations including Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow. Improvements to reliability, station facilities and onboard connectivity could therefore make a practical difference to business travellers who depend on the route.

The Government has confirmed that Avanti West Coast will transfer into public ownership when its current contract expires, as part of the wider programme to bring passenger rail services under public control ahead of the creation of Great British Railways.

The announcement follows continued concerns over performance on the West Coast Main Line. According to the Department for Transport, Avanti West Coast's performance remains below the industry average, with passengers experiencing delays and cancellations. The Government says infrastructure problems caused by long-term underinvestment are the largest source of disruption on the route.

The change of ownership will be accompanied by a programme of investment and operational improvements.

An additional £10 million is being allocated to power and signalling maintenance, with the work due to be delivered by the end of 2027. This comes on top of an existing £840 million investment intended to address infrastructure problems, which the Government says account for around a third of delays on the West Coast Main Line.

Passengers should also see changes before Avanti moves into public ownership. Timetable amendments designed to provide faster and more reliable services are due to begin from December 2026, with a particular focus on routes into and out of Manchester.

London Euston is also set for significant investment. The Government has announced £50 million of improvements at the station over the next three years, with an initial £11 million going towards additional seating, improved waiting areas and refurbished toilets. Plans also include allowing passengers to access trains earlier before departure, with the aim of making boarding less congested.

A further £10 million will be spent improving comfort and cleanliness at other stations along the West Coast Main Line before the end of 2027.

One development likely to be particularly relevant to people travelling for work is improved onboard connectivity. Low Earth orbit satellite technology is due to be deployed to provide more stable internet connections, alongside faster and more reliable Wi-Fi and 5G coverage on trains.

Paul Baker, Sales Director at Global Travel Management, said:

“For business travellers, reliability is absolutely crucial. A delayed or cancelled train can mean a missed meeting, a disrupted itinerary or additional cost, while dependable onboard connectivity increasingly allows people to use their travelling time productively. Any improvements that make journeys on this important route more reliable and easier to work around will therefore be welcomed by people travelling on business.”

The Avanti West Coast transfer forms part of a much wider restructuring of Britain’s railways. The Government says it remains on course to transfer all relevant passenger services into public ownership by the end of 2027, ahead of the establishment of Great British Railways.

For companies with employees regularly travelling between London, the Midlands, North West England and Scotland, the immediate consideration is that Avanti West Coast will continue operating services until the transfer on 7 March 2027. The more significant question for business travel programmes will be whether the investment and operational changes announced alongside nationalisation translate into greater reliability and a better passenger experience.
